Selecting an Oak Computer Desk
Just about every household now has the need for a computer desk. Finding one that meets the computer user’s needs and that will last can be difficult. Many desks now are made of particle board, which does not stand up to the test of time. A solid oak computer desk will not only look nice, but will last for years. There are several design elements to consider when selecting a computer desk.
Is it solid oak? Not all desks that say they are made of oak are actually solid oak. Many times they will just have components that are made of oak and the rest will be particle board. Oak computer desks tend to be a little more expensive, than those made of particle board, but they last much much longer. If you are going to spend the money on one, make sure that it is actually all made of oak.
Is there room for everything? Make sure that the desk can hold not only your central processing unit (CPU), monitor, keyboard, and mouse, but that there is also room for any papers or books you may want to have out while working on the computer. Also having space available on which to write may come in handy. Many computer desks will have a keyboard drawer which can be tucked away under the desk when the keyboard is not in use. If you have peripherals like a printer, scanner, or camera dock, is there room for them on the desk or will they be on a second surface?
Is it comfortable? It is probably a good idea to sit at a few different oak computer desks to see what you want in terms of height and positioning of drawers and other elements. If there is a keyboard drawer, can it be adjusted to a position that is comfortable for typing? Think about where you will want to keep high use items like pens, pencils, and paper and make sure there is a convenient place to keep them that won’t have you reaching frequently.
What about the cables? Whenever you deal with computers, there are all sorts of cables and wires that need to be run. Many computer desks have slots and holes built in to help keep the cables and wires organized.
When you need a computer desk. you want to find one that will meet your needs and last for many years. Buying a cheaper desk made of particle board is a short term money saver. Spending a little more on an oak computer desk will save you money in the long run as you will not have to replace it as often. Oak desks that are well built can stand up to many years of use and also make an attractive addition to any room.
